Digital Arts Trail celebrates the creativity of young people across Wolverhampton. Developed in response to a need for more high-quality cultural activities for young people, this project gave them the chance to co-create original artworks and transform them into augmented reality experiences.
Working with local artists, youth groups from The Way Youth Zone, Beats a Bar, and Urban Room 01902 designed unique 2D pieces, later brought to life through AR. The result is an interactive trail that showcases their talent and offers a fresh way to experience art in the city.

The team at Printdot (Keith & Natasha) liaised with the arts trail director, city council and the way youth zone to determine the best use of materials for the project, applying tests and samples to ensure the material would be sustainable through a variety of temperatures that UK gives us these days.
The way youth zone is just 1 of 9 arts pieces designed by local artists and young people, printed and installed by the team at Printdot, over the last 18 months, others include Wolverhampton market container vinyls, Wolverhampton bus station window vinyls, the Mander centre internal wall vinyl, the Wulfrun centre external brick wall vinyl, Wolverhampton train station external brick wall vinyl, Wolverhampton University window vinyl, Wolverhampton College external brick wall vinyl and Wolverhampton Art Gallery windows.
This particular art piece installed on the side of The Way Youth Zone in Wolverhampton measures 15m wide x 7.5m high. Consists of 165 individual pieces of vinyl applied to glass panes, set up, printed and laminated in house. And then installed in a total of 10 hours – a personal best for the team. All pieces fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The edges were sealed against weather and sliced 1.5m up from base of the graphic, this ensures that long term if vandalism is to occur by attempting to pull off the vinyls, then the vandal will only succeed in stripping off the bottom 1.5m graphic which then is easy to be replaced off low level access rather than the full 7.5m strip.
This project was installed working around severe heat and rainstorms to ensure full adhesion and safety of the team.
Sat on the ring road in Wolverhampton, this particular piece of the arts trail has been well received by locals, many have said it brightens up their morning commute. Quite a few children and young people stopped to chat while the team were installing the graphic, excited to see the wall given a new lease of life, and happy when they realised the artwork was designed by children. Judging from the interest there may even be a few young people inspired by the art and installation to pursue a career in the creative arts industries.
