Best Large Scale Project
Name: London Designer Outlet – Wall of wonder
Company: The Cambridge Sign Company
Description:
The project was to replace the previous wall wrap with a newly designed artwork onto the textured rendered wall and partial floor. The artwork was created by emerging designers Kulay Labitigan, Haihan Li and Claudia Casino, graduates of the MA Narrative Environments course at Central Saint Martins, part of University of the Arts London.
For this project we opted to use Arlon 8000 Ultra tack with a matched cast matt laminate due to its extremely high bond, plus we had succesfully used this material on the previous installation 5 years ago which had stood the test of time and still looked fantastic on the day of removal. This was printed on our Epson 80600 printers and laminated on our Easymount SH1600 laminators.
The old material was removed and wall cleaned in preperation for the new graphic, this was completed a week prior so the wall was completely dry as is required with external wall wraps. Installation took place over 3 days with a team of 3 installers and totalled approximately 145sq/m of media. This was all installed with mobile scaffold tower access due to the incline of the footpath meaning powered access was not viable.
The graphic had to be patiently installed to ensure accurate registratoin of the drops due to the length of material and potential stretch due to installing in the mid June heat. Once initially tacked in place, twin heat rollers (Yellotools) and heatguns are utilised to apply high heat and pressure to form to the contours of the wall render. A 1.2m width floor vinyl was then installed to continue the design and create depth, Grafityp UK Steet FL laminate was chosen due to its extreme non slip properties externally, even when wet.
The overall outcome was a large scale interactive and engaging artwork peice as you enter London Designer Outlet on Wembly Park that brings vibrancy and interest to an otherwise blank white wall. The client and public feedback has been fantastic, and the client now has a dedicated page on their website further explaining the background behind the design and how this connects with the Wembley area, as well as using it for a numner of promotion peices.
