Here at the sign shop I was tasked to recreate 30 pieces of work for the National Gallery and Torre abbey to run from March – September at full size, and work out how best to install them around Torquay starting from the Train Station, all the way to the Harbourside, over 2Km of trail. I had to send a full size sample up to London to be approved to print before starting the actual work and was informed that the gallery’s photographic team were very impressed with the quality of the print and I was the only printer to produce the works on vinyl before application to boards, which were all made with highways grade composite with a select few being on Aluminium.
The scale of the scale of the images ran from 51 x 45cm to 200 x 300 cm so each presented their own challenges for installation as not every piece could be installed onto a wall. Some were affixed to existing railings with 60mm posts bolted down to the floor for support, others were fixed to water filled IBC’s (which then had to be wrapped with banners to disguise them) all in the five weeks of printing and mounting artwork and the installation took two weeks with paintings, banners, and interpretation boards.
I received high praise for one piece on display during the grand opening from the Director of the National Gallery for the Wilton Diptych, as it was the first time it had been on display outside of the gallery showing both sides of the panel, made from a carefully folded aluminium backing before being installed on top of the fence within the Abbey grounds.
