The print room team at Derby City Council (DCC) have wanted to be more commercial for long time, but as we’re not from a commercial background, with only providing support to internal colleagues, this was never really explored. DCC employed a Commercial Manager back in 2023 and there has since been a strategic push to be more commercial across the organisation. It was at this point we sought their advice on how we could create a new successful commercial service. We started by doing some market research to see what products were popular, looked at creating some branding, worked on our external pricing and started development on a website. We then did a service launch back in October 2023, internally within the organisation at first, to start getting used to marketing and selling our service. It’s been a steep learning curve and a lot of trial and error to see what marketing methods work and who our target market is, but we’re now at a stage where we have a regular customer base and new customers approaching us daily. In the near future we hope to invest in some web2print software to improve our website and customer journey and create a social media profile.
